Environmental Shrink Boots

Shrink boots provide mechanical and environmental protection to connector-to-cable transitions. Specially formulated polymers are injection-molded, then heated and expanded. The shape-memory property of the material allows it to return to its original shape when heated with a hot air gun. Optional adhesive coatings on the inside of the boot provide a watertight, high-strength bond to the cable jacket and the connector or adapter.
Shrink boots are supplied in expanded form. The boot is heated, stretched on a mandrel, then cooled. The boot retains its expanded form until heat is applied.
Application of heat restores the boot to it’s original dimensions.
Adapter boots are designed for use with connector adapters which attach to mil spec circular connectors. Adapters have a boot groove to accept an interlocking lip on the boot for improved strength. These adapters accept both shielded and unshielded cable. Adapters can be unthreaded from the connector for repair of damaged connector pins.
Lipless boots are designed for direct attachment to connector threads. The adapter is eliminated, saving weight and space. Adhesive lining provides sealing and improved mechanical strength.
Shrink boots are available in three materials: Type 1 high performance elastomer provides improved resistance to heat, oils and fuels. Type 2 zero halogen material is intended for applications where low toxicity is a must. Type 3 general purpose flexible polyolefin is a good choice for occasional exposure to heat and chemicals.

Conduit is an outstanding alternative to jacketed cables, especially for prototype assemblies, systems with extreme flexibility and physical protection requirements and also when the need for field repair or system expansion is anticipated. Polymer tubing versions are lightweight, durable, flexible and available in a broad range of material choices. Metal-core versions offer crush resistance and high-levels of EMI shielding. Connector-to-conduit backshells, transition fittings and special adapters are available in factory assembled and user installable styles. Glenair’s in-house braiding production capacity is truly impressive. More than 50 braiders, ranging from 16 to 96 carriers, provide the capability to produce large quantities of precise metal and non-metallic braid and expandable sleeving in tubular, tapered, and flat configurations in virtually any material and length to suit customer requirements. We are also able to supply direct over-braiding services for complex, multi-branch cable assemblies and harnesses.
Braiding materials used at Glenair include bare copper, tin-plated copper-covered steel, copper plated with tin, nickel or silver; bronze, stainless steel, copper-covered steel, aluminum, nylon, Dacron®, Nomex®, Kevlar® and monofilament Peek, Teflon®, Ryton®, Halar®, and polyester. Glenair’s newest addition to our braid products is the extremely lightweight AmberStrand® composite thermoplastic EMI/RFI braiding shielding. Plus, we now offer an additional microfilament braiding solution made of stainless steel, called ArmorLite™ that is both extremely lightweight and high-temperature resistant.
Composite Piggyback Boot Connector Adapters
For Fast and Reliable Shrink Boot Application
The recovery of 3-to-1 and 4-to-1 ratio shrink boots for environmental sealing and strain relief on aircraft interconnect cabling is a critical final step in the cable harness assembly process. This time consuming task relies on each individual technician to correctly position and shrink boots on each of the many connectors found on the aircraft. Glenair composite piggyback shrink boot connector adapters take all of the guesswork out of this time-consuming assembly task. Partially recovered boots, pre-attached to composite adapters, take less than half the time to shrink in place, and are exactingly pre-positioned for optimal sealing and strain relief each and every time the task is completed.
